Reincarnation and Soul Mates Kelsy Friday, November 27, 2009

Question:

I have a close friend that met a someone she has fallen in love with. They both talk about having known each other before in another life and talk about their souls being connected. How does the church feel about this and do they have an explaination for the connection supposed "soul mates" feel?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Kelsey:

The feeling of "soul mates" comes from two primary sources: 1) profound psychological or spiritual compatibility between the two people, and 2) chemical compatibility. When we say there is "chemistry between us" it is literally true. The subtle smell of a person may "connect" with another person. This connection (chemistry) can be so strong that one feels like a "soul mate."

Reincarnation, however, is a fake idea. It does not exist. For a Catholic to believe in reincarnation they would be in sin and no longer in communion with the Church.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

1013 Death is the end of man's earthly pilgrimage, of the time of grace and mercy which God offers him so as to work out his earthly life in keeping with the divine plan, and to decide his ultimate destiny. When "the single course of our earthly life" is completed, we shall not return to other earthly lives: "It is appointed for men to die once" (Heb 9:27). There is no "reincarnation" after death.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
