What is General Confession | Deacon Larry | Monday, November 2, 2009 |
Question: Regarding a general confession... what is its purpose, who should partake of it and why would one need/want to make it? Is this somethiong one should do on a periodic basis - every few years or so? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Deacon: General Confession is a religious exercise, a life review. It helps to see the trends and arcs of one's spiritual life. A General Confession is commonly done with people about to be professed in Religious life, or about to be ordained as deacon, priest, bishop, or those about to take private vows in a third order or confraternity. I offered a General Confession when I was professed in the Order of the Legion of St. Michael in 1995. I will be doing another one soon, since a lot has happened since 1995. We ask people who come to us for Deliverance Counseling to offer a General Confession. In preparation for our counseling it is important for our clients to review their life, especially as it relates to spiritual warfare issues. I personally think that a General Confession is good for everyone at some point in their life, perhaps in mid-life when one is old enough to see the trends and arc of their lives thus far, but this is not a requirement for anyone unless a religious order or seminary requires it of their people. God Bless,
