Was this conversion and reception of sacraments valid Chas Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Question:

Here is the situation. I know of a couple where the husband was married in the church but got divorced. He has never attempted to try to see if he could get an annulment. He later met and married this non-Catholic girl. They had a child together and baptized the child. I know the child's baptism is valid. But my question is really this.

The woman went through RCIA, was baptized, confirmed, received first communion. I asked how it was possible that she could be accepted into the church, receive all these sacraments but still remain in an invalid marriage. I asked if the priest at their church knew about their situation of being in an invalid marriage and was told that the priest said it was just fine.

At this point they are still living in sin because the husbands first marriage has never been annulled. So was this conversion, Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation valid or just illicit?

Thank you and God Bless.

Dear Chas:

I think we ought to start horse-whipping these priests who are heretics or heterodox. Their arrogance and scandal does a great deal of damage to the Faithful.

If the man never received an annulment then his marriage to this woman is invalid. The marriage does not exist and they are living in the sin of adultery and are risking their souls to hell.

The wife should never have been baptized and confirmed. I am not sure, but I believe under these circumstances her baptism and confirmation may not be valid as there was no intent to stop her sin. If I am not correct on that, however, then I think those Sacraments were at least illicit.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt at all that her receiving communion was grave sin since she is living in a state of adultery.

These two need to stop receiving the Eucharist immediately, and the husband needs to file for an annulment. After the annulment is granted, if it is granted, then they can return to the Sacraments after proper Confession. (Now they could be in good standing if they lived as brother and sister (i.e., no sex) until the annulment is granted.)

This is a real mess that is the fault of a priest acting with evil actions. Frankly, the bishop needs to be informed of this priest and what he did. He needs to be disciplined or even suspended.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
