Question Title Posted By Question Date
Chant and Song Maria Friday, September 3, 2004

Question:

Hi Brother,

This question is a bit petty, but I hope you won't mind too much. I was reading on Catholic site that Poor Clare's do not sing the Divine Office. Then on the Poor Clare's website it says that they chant the divine office. Isn't this the same as singing it? Or is there a difference between song and chant? If they are the same, do you know if the Poor Clare's chant the Divine Office or sing it.

Thanks,

Maria

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Maria:

Chanting and singing are the same thing in this context.

I have no idea whether the Poor Claires recite or sing/chant the Divine Office. Such things would be outlined in their Rule of Life, or determined by the Superior.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
