don't know what to do Robert Friday, October 9, 2009

Question:

I am 30 years old and I have been suffering with severe scrupulosity for the past four and a half years. I have talked with priests and a counselor through Catholic Social Services to no avail. I have been unemployed for over three years because I don't know what to do with my life.

I live with my widowed mother. I have applied and been accepted for graduate theology studies but without a job I cannot afford it. I used to work for a Catholic newspaper. I would like to work for the Church again. I tried teaching high school theology but could not handle the immaturity. I have prayed repeatedly to God that He take away my scrupulosity and bring me work. I have asked others to pray. I am still scrupulous and unemployed. I feel like a loser. All I want to do with my life is build up the Church. I am a faithful Catholic. I pray the rosary daily. I don't know what I am supposed to do. I just want a simple life serving God. Please help me.

God bless you,
Robert

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Robert:

Scrupulosity is the religious form of Compulsive/Obsessive Disorder. Have you talked with a psychiatrist who can prescribe medicine specifically for this type of disorder?

If you have not talked with a psychiatrist, then I would recommend doing so straight-away.

For a variety of reasons sometimes people become disabled. If that is or becomes your situation that does not preclude your involvement in helping the Church. Even if nothing else is possible, the most important job in the Church is that of praying. You can have a ministry of prayer.

As for the scrupulosity itself, in addition to medication that can correct chemical imbalances in the brain that may cause obsessive/compulsive thoughts and behavior, you can work on correcting various thinking errors.

Since I do not know the specifics of your scrupulosity it is difficult to give any specifics on what thinking errors need to be corrected.

Generally and typically, however, those with scrupulosity tend to have problems in discerning the difference between venial and grave sins. A priest confessor can help with this, but essentially, if this is part of your problem, you need to learn what the Church says are grave sins. Then you need to keep to what the Church says is grave, not what you "think" are grave.

In other words, the key to thinking errors is to remind oneself of the objective truth of things. For example, some feel like God does not love them. This is a thinking error. This thinking error can be countered by reciting verses from the Bible that says that God loves us. Since God is not a liar we can trust what the Word of God says.  When we refuse to accept the Truth of God, then we call God a liar whether or not we mean to.

Here is a document we use in counseling to help our client understand who they are in Christ. Perhaps it will be helpful to you, too.

In addition to all that, it is possible to have a spiritual element. For that, we have a Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog with many prayers that are useful for various circumstances.

There is one prayer that can be used in the event of the presence of a "spirit of scrupulosity". It is called Rebuking Particular Spirits. In this prayer, you can rebuke the spirit of scrupulosity and ask for a spirit of trust in God, or a spirit of peace, etc.

I would definitively check with a psychiatrist about medication for obsessive/compulsive disorder.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
