Re: Praying What Divine Office Daniel Sunday, May 31, 2009

Question:

Hi,

Thank you for your reply in my previous post. Concerning the Little Office of the BVM by Fr. Rotelle, what does being "approved by the Sacred Congregation" mean? Does it mean that I'm praying "with the Church" when I pray it or as Wikipedia stated that even though it is from the Congregation it is "approved for private use" only?

Another question is about the other "Little Offices," such as the Little Offices of the Passion, Sacred Heart, St Joseph and Guardian Angel. Am I praying "with the Church" when I pray these when it doesn't contain any psalms, there are several versions of these Offices and there is no version released for all these in 1961/1962?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Daniel:

For "private use" means that the Little Office is to be used by the individual, not by a monastery to say the Divine Office, or a public recitation of the Divine Office in a parish.

The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary is approved by the Sacred Congregation as an alternative to the regular Divine Office. Thus, it is "praying with the Church" as a form of Divine Office.

The other "little offices" you list are not approved as an alternative to the regular Divine Office as far as I know and thus would be only a personal devotion and not "praying with the Church."

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
