Question: Is it mortal(grave) sin to leave the mass and church |
||
Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Michael: No, to leave the Mass before it is over is not a grave sin in a situation where the Priest is preaching error in rebellion against the Church. Bishops and the Holy See have repeatedly said that supporting pro-abortion politicians is grave sin. The grave sin is on the priest's part for disobeying the Church and causing scandal (another grave sin). However, you still have the Sunday obligation to uphold. In the situation you describe, if you leave, you need to go to another parish who offers the Mass at a different time. If it is not possible to go to a Mass later in the day, then you will need to remain at this Mass despite the fact the priest is preaching rebellion. Offer your suffering up to God for the conversion of that priest. God Bless,
