Can this guy be baptized daniel Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Question:

I don't know why I am emailing this. Only that I believe that nothing is impossible with God. Also I have feeling God is leading me somehow to bring this man into the faith.

My daughter is living with a man. She is 26 he is 23. They have lived together for 5 years now. They are both crack addicts and drug abusers and have spent time in jail. Her 5 months. Him 8 months or so.

He has never been baptized and raised by fallen away drug addict parents. My daughter has been raised in a faith-filled Catholic home till she moved out at 16. I talked to him about Jesus and Paradise. He was very interested. I asked him would you like to be baptized and he said yes. Now what the heck do I do. How can this happen with someone so steeped in sin but who shows some sign of wanting to get closer to God? These are extra ordinary times which I believe call for extra ordinary means. I need some quidance here. Not for my sake but for his.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Daniel:

Baptism of an adult requires acceptance of Jesus Christ and the desire to enter into the family of God, through his Church. It is an initiation into Christ's Church as well as conferring a salvific grace.

Normally an adult goes through RCIA before baptism, but can receive private instruction instead.

He needs to talk to a priest about his desire. The priest can then evaluate whether or not he should be baptized.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
