anorexia and suicide attempts katarina Monday, March 30, 2009

Question:

Dear Bro. Ignatius,
my oldest son has a girlfriend who seems to have anorexia problems. She has also taken too much antidepression pills and is waiting for hospital admission now. She also often crys, it seems like she had been through a lot during her childhood. I also know that she has been listenig to metal music (Nightwish etc.). I have found her looking for cemeteries and graves on the web pages. How do we help her (any special prayers?)? I have advised my son not to stay in touch with her but he says he had already made a promes to her, to stay with her in good, in bad conditions and so on. Even though she threatens him, too.

Are you familiar with Gloria Polo's case? What is your opinion?

Thanks for your answer.

Blessings,

katarina

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Katarina:

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Your son's girlfriend needs psychiatric care. As for your son, you do not mention his age. But regardless of whether he is a teenager or adult, this relationship will not succeed and can be damaging to both of them. As a platonic friend even there has to be limits, but maintaining a friendship within the limits that her psychiatric condition presents may be possible. But, as a romantic relationship, this is a no win situation. The promise to be with her as her boyfriend in sickness and health is a promise only valid in marriage.

Put bluntly, this girl is not qualified to be involved in a romantic relationship. This story is not likely to have a happy, or healthy, ending.

As for Gloria Polo, I pay little attention to any private revelation, even those approved by the Church. Private Revelations have nothing to offer that is not already offered by God's Public Revelation. At best, a private revelation, that has been officially approved, may assist a person in their faith, but it is never required to grow in faith. Sometime good devotions come from approved private revelations, such as the Fatima prayer during the Rosary, the Miraculous Medal, the Divine Mercy, and the Brown Scapular. But, these are all from approved private revelations.

If a private revelation has not been approved by the Church, we should not take much notice, and take it all with a grain of salt. This goes for all unapproved private revelations, including Medjugorje. There is a good reason for this. Historically, there have been private revelations that looked good only to be found false later, in doctrinal error, and condemned by the Church. Sometimes doctrinal error is subtle. It can be so subtle that only a qualified theologian may notice it. That is why the Holy See employs theologians to examine writings and such from visionaries. We must rely upon the judgment of the Holy See. Until then, I advise avoiding unapproved apparitions, or at least staying at a distance, and certainly not becoming heavily invested in them emotionally.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
