God's Presence in Purgatory Mahina Monday, March 16, 2009

Question:

Is God present in purgatory? In other words can the souls in purgatory be in communication with God or feel His presence in the way (or similar to the way) we do such as through His Spirit; or are they, for the time that they are in purgatory purging their sins, out of His presence?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Mahina:

God is omnipresent; He is everywhere. Thus, there is no place that God is not. Therefore, God's presence is on this earth, in the universe, in heaven, in purgatory, and even in hell. He is everywhere.

Our ability to see His presence, however, varies to the degree of our perfection. Those in hell do not see God by their own choice. They are deprived completely of the vision of God. Those in purgatory will be aware of God to the degree of their perfection until the time they enter into the beatific vision in heaven.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
