Hard times ahead | Chas | Saturday, March 14, 2009 |
Question: Many people are worried about the economy and the near future. They are afraid of economic collapse the world over and that there will be a scarcity of food. Many people are looking up to buying and storing food. There have been some priests, well known and respected on EWTN that do talk about hard days coming. I understand all that and my trust is in Our Lord which they say is what we should do and pray, pray, pray. In the past there have been some cloistered nuns that have said they were starting to store up food and water. I am retired and am receiving SS, withdrawing a bit from an IRA, which unfortunately has taken a downturn, and have a part time job. My wife also has a part time job. I want to be able to pay off my debts and not have to worry about my IRA and live only on my SS and our part time jobs. Many feel that because of an economic collapse, even our SS benefits will be gone, many jobs will vanish or cut back, the money in our banks and IRA's will vanish (so we should withdraw as much money from banks and keep it in a safe place) and food cost is going to skyrocket so we are told that we should start storing food. Do you think it’s prudent to join them and start buying and storing food? I feel that in some respects, the ones that are raking in the money making it are the ones like the site above selling packaged food. I feel there is too much doom and gloom being spread around and people are panicking. That's one reason people are predicting a collapse because of panic. Your thoughts please. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Chas: BE NOT AFRAID! In hard times and in times of persecution the Church flourishes. These are exciting times to live because we have so much opportunity to witness to our Faith. We have so much opportunity to put our faith to the test and find the God is faithful. God promises that nothing will come into our lives that we cannot handle. God is not a liar so I believe Him. God will give us the grace to handle whatever comes. He may not give us that grace now, or tomorrow, but He will give us the grace at the time that we need it. The economy will turn around. It may take a few years, but it will turn around. Our bank deposits are safe. Even if a bank closes the FDIC ensures our deposits. The doomsday-sky-is-falling attitude I think is not a Christian attitude as it is based on a distrust of God. We need to trust in God. BE NOT AFRAID! God Bless,
