How to find a spiritual director? dandrea Saturday, March 7, 2009

Question:

Hello,

I wonder if there are any guidelines or directions in trying to find a spiritual director? Should that director be your parish priest/confessor or could it be a priest from another parish or anyone who really knows their faith? I really want to make sure that in finding someone to help in my guidance that I won't be led in the wrong direction.

I will pray for a spiritual director and also to know them when they enter my life.

Thank you for this site and all the hard work that goes into it. I know it was a blessing for me when I found it and is for others too. You are in my prayers.

Dandrea

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Dandrea:

A spiritual director needs to be a wise and mature practicing Catholic, male or female, who is 100% orthodox and loyal to the Pope, and exercises his or her faith within the Catholic worldview.

If there are special needs, such as a person having visions, or the person is interested in some spiritual pursuit such as contemplation, then the spiritual director needs to know about such things in order to properly give advise and direction.

The best source to learn about what a spiritual director is and is not, how to find a spiritual director, and what to do if you cannot find a spiritual director is the book by Fr. Thomas Dubay, Seeking Spiritual Direction: How to Grow the Divine Life Within.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
