Question:

i am a hindu wanting to marry my roman catholic boy friend.i heard that it would just be a legal marriage if we were to marry.i would want this marriage to be sacramental.i had been attending the church for the past 6 years and i believe in bringing up our kids as catholics.but converting myself would hurt my parents....and hence i am a bit hesitant.what should i do to make our marriage sacramental.all the catholic priests that i met were sceptical about this.is it my mistake that i was born a hindu...

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Nair:

The only way for your marriage to a Catholic to be Sacramental is for you to convert to the Catholic Church and be baptized. A Sacramental marriage only happens between a man and a woman who are both validly baptized.

Since you have been attending Mass for so long and you appear to have an interest in converting, I would encourage you to convert. If you convert your can then receive the Eucharist and have a Sacramental marriage. I understand that this may cause problems with your family, but your soul is more important than family relations. In the Bible Jesus said that because of Him families can be at odds with each other.

You can remain Hindu and get married to a Catholic if the bishop grants a dispensation. This will make your marriage valid, but it will not be Sacramental unless you are baptized. Of course for this to happen there has to be a promise of raising the children Catholic.

All this can be resolve by your conversion and baptism. I encourage you to do that.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
