Question:

i know your not a very big political person but i need to know if its right that from the church's view that Bush and Cheney are being accused of war crimes. I know torturing people are wrong. But if they didn't do what they did, we wouldn't of known what was in the future of America. I hate situations like this because you feel stuck between thinking of millions of people in danger and a moral teaching of god. I'm a conservative who struggles with the way liberals run this country. I fear for the worse because Obama is in office. What do you do when you in situations like this. I know made makes but i do not believe he is an evil man. i despise the liberals so much because of all the lies they spread about him.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Suzanne:

The idea that Bush is a war criminal is utterly ridiculous. This is just another ploy of Liberals gone nuts with power. Liberals have no tolerance toward anyone who disagrees with them. They tend to what to quelch and punish all opposition. It is part of their megalomania and self-appointed "anointed" status.

Especially with what is happening in Washington D.C. now, I highly recommend people read the book, The Vision of the Anointed, by Thomas Sowell. It was written in the 1990s but is prophetic to what is happening today.

As far as torture is concerned the Church condemns torture as a moral evil:

2297 Torture which uses physical or moral violence to extract confessions, punish the guilty, frighten opponents, or satisfy hatred is contrary to respect for the person and for human dignity.

In addition the Church teaches that the ends does not justify the means.

1759 "An evil action cannot be justified by reference to a good intention" (cf. St. Thomas Aquinas, Dec. praec. 6). The end does not justify the means.

Thus, even it torture resulted in saving lives, it may not be done. We cannot practice an evil action even if it results in a good result.

The political issue in the U.S. is the definition of torture. Waterboarding is not considered torture to our government. Well, waterboarding is using physical violence -- forcing a person to think he is drowning over and over until he talks.

While waterboarding may or may not be legal, it is immoral.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
