Question:

I have recently heard of people who belong to the Gnostic group. My friend told me that he belongs to this and called it a church. He also said they were part of the early catholic church but were excommunicated.

He attends every sunday and receives communion. Can you tell me anything about this.

Sorry, I wasn't sure which place to post this.

Dear Jovita:

I moved your question to the Faith and Spirituality Forum since it does not directly deal with Spiritual Warfare.

Gnosticism is a heresy that thrived in the first three centuries of the Church, though originate with pantheistic sects before the time of Christ. They proposes a theory of Salvation by knowledge -- esoteric knowledge -- hidden knowledge -- available only to a few people.

The Gnostics practiced magic and they assimilated much Christian phraseology and corrupted many Christian doctrines.

Their heresy included the idea that matter was hostile to spirit and that the universe was held to be a depravation of the Deity. They borrowed heavily from pantheistic sects that existed before Christ. They deny the Revelation of God to the Apostles and deny Christ established a Magisterial Church.

Gnosticism as an organized religion became extinct, but survives today among the New Age, some pagan groups, and occultic groups.

Gnostics are NOT Christian, they are heretics. They have no "church".

If this person is a Catholic he is automatically excommunicated if he holds to Gnostic theology since to do so would be a heresy.

If he believes what Gnostics believe then he is also committing the grave sin of sacrilege of the Eucharist if he is receiving communion.

This person needs to have the integrity and courage to stop receiving the Eucharist and to stop pretending to be Catholic if he has gnostic views.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
