Fasting and Abstinence James Monday, January 19, 2009

Question:

Hi,

Thanks for your reply on my previous queries. I just want to ask now about fasting and abstinence. Here in the Philippines, fasting is on Ash Wed. and Good Fri., and abstinence is All Fri. of the year. But what if those days coincides when I'll be going to a wedding or birthday celebration or, in Dec., if we have a Christmas party or any other celebrations, am I exempted from the fast or abstinence?

God bless+
James

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear James:

We are not exempt from any fast or abstinence except as provided by Church law. For example: If a Feast Day designated by the Church or the Diocese falls on a Friday, then the abstinence requirement is suspended because it is a day for celebrating the Feast. The local bishop can suspend the requirement for certain other occasions.

But, our obligation does not cease for a wedding, birthday, anniversary, Christmas party or other non-Church celebrations.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
