Sex with former wife Len Tuesday, August 31, 2004

Question:

I have been divorced for a three months. My ex-wife and I may well decide to have sex in the future. I do not understand the divorce issue in the Catholic Church, but is it ok for us to have sex? We are both Lutheran and married in a Lutheran Church. Obviously, she is still single.

I do not see what difference it would make, but I had a vesectomy some years ago, so it is not possible for her to get pregnant.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Len:

Sex is permissible ONLY within the marriage of a man and a woman. Any sex outside of marriage is the grave sin of fornication.

Thus, since you are no longer married to this woman, you cannot have sex with her without sinning big time.

You need to remain chaste until such time as you get married to "whomever." If you get married 10 years from now, then that means no sex for 10 years. If you never get married again, then that means no sex for the rest of your life.

Bottomline: no marriage -- no sex

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
