Fornication vs. Adultery Steve Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Question:

I have never been married and I made the grave mistake of having sexual relations w/ someone who has been married before (not in the Catholic Church) and received a divorce. I know that this is a grave and moral sin. I know that this is fornication on my part; but is it also adultery due to the fact that she has been married before and not received an annulment? I just want to be sure I know so I can use the correct term when I go to Confession.

Thank You.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Steve:

I really would not worry about the technical terms. The point is that you had sex with someone you are not married to. You can say something like, "I confess I had sex with a divorced woman x times".

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
