Question Title Posted By Question Date
1994 as date of shift in worldviews David Sunday, November 16, 2008

Question:

Dear Bro. Ignatius,

I hope this is the right place to ask this question and that it is not a silly question to ask. I have read that you date the shift to a mainly secular and post-Christian worldview to 1994; I wondered on what grounds. I hope it doesn't sound as though I am arguing with you, because I am not; I just wondered what happened in 1994, and why that year in particular.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

David

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear David:

Well, there is no definitive formula to determine that Christendom ended around 1994. It is a judgment based upon observation of cultural changes. It would take an entire book to answer your question, but I will try to offer a few points.

Many culture watchers identify the early 1990's as a significant change in the cultural direction. These cultural changes were building for many decades but around 1994 I believe the pressures built to a perfect storm.

In and around 1994 the post-modern worldview seemed to move from being a thorn in the side of the Christian worldview (which had been the predominate worldview in the West for 1500 years) to the predominate worldview.

Evidence of this includes the influence of political correctness and plausibility gaining prominance in business, government, and community organizations. The political correct movement gained momentum in the 1980's but by 1994 was essentially institutionalized.

Additional evidence was the prevalence of our young people losing a sense of sin. Fornication, lying, stealing, and such has been done by all generations, but in the past if we decided to act sinfully we recognized it as sin, or at least as a violation of a societal norm. This is no longer the case. What we easiy called sin in the past is no longer considered a sin today. Concubinage is the norm, more than 60% of our High School students think that cheating is okay, moral relativism is the norm.

From 1992-1996 I worked in a print shop. We had hundreds of couples coming in to order wedding invitations. In nearly every case where the couple paid by check both the man and woman's name was on the check under the same address (and these were not brand new accounts in anticipation of the marriage). They were most likely living together.

Again, these things existed before 1994, but the prevalence adn instensity of these things exploded in the early 1990's to such a degree that even traditional Christians were losing their moral compus.

The homosexual agenda also was developing strongly in the late 1980's. By the early 1990's any criticism of homosexuals, even when legitimate, was considered homophobia. This has developed to such a degree that now we are in a hate speech culture where any comment against homosexuals (such as taught in the Bible), or against liberals, is considered hate speech.

Our children since the early 1990's have not only lost their moral compass, but lost any sense of what is typically called "traditional values." In fact, today, many of our young people presume those who promote traditional values are at best "old fashion" and at worse "hate mongers."

Whenever our young people have a moral compus and resist this cultural bankruptcy they are treated with diistain.

The Obama election is the epitomy of this culture war. He is an incarnation of moral relavitism. As a result of this phenomenon people are going nuts. The venear of traditional values has been tore away. Some people were saying that if Obama was not elected that a race war would ensue. Since his elections people have been abused and even beaten for merely disagreeing with Obama, and worse, for just being a Christian.

This week, a Christian missionary, who was on a corner in San Francisco not bothering anyone but merely singing hymns with her group was attacked by a man who grabed her Bible and hit her in the head with it with such force that it knocked her to the ground. He then began to kick her.

This sort of thing has been an undercurrent for decades. In the 1990's the worldview that allows such a behavior was set in motion as a predominate worldview. The "Obama Revolution" is the representation of victory in this culture war. In the next few years we will see how much our culture will have its knee caps broken and be raped by the Obama worldview.

When looking at our culture throughout the 20th Century one could see this coming.

I doubt if I have satisfied your question, but as I said, it would take a book to answer and this answer is only off the top of my pointed head.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
