Question:

hey brother,

it's been awhile since i had a question. i know dragons aren't real but i like their symbolism of strength and being a fighter. would is be wrong to get it as a tattoo. i know you don't like tattoos but ive been thinking to get one of a dragon for awhile but i dont know if its bad in the eyes of the catholic church. Every tattoo that i plan to get is catholic based. so what is the churchs stance of a ragon tattoo?

Question Answered by

Dear Suzanne:

Well, as you know, I think it would be better to not get a tattoo at all, but...

As for the dragon symbol: This symbol can be found all over the world in many diverse cultures. In Christian history dragons were symbols of monsters that terrorized people and symbols of satanic evil. One of the highest achievements of a hero in medieval legend was the slaying of a dragon, as in the story of St. George, where the victory over the dragon, was a symbolic victory of Christianity.

If you want to keep a Catholic theme then I would suggest a image of St. George slaying a dragon. This would prevent any confusion that you are using the dragon symbol that stems from something non-Christian and would, actually, be a great symbol of the Victory of Christianity which is an honorable symbol.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
