Prophecy of St. Nilus | Scott | Wednesday, October 8, 2008 |
Question: Does the Catholic Church endorse this prophecy? For those who haven't heard of it, you can find it on Fisheaters or many other sites. Basically in the year 300 AD, St. Nilus predicts the downward spiral of our generation (19th and 20th century) and how we eventually will be our own demise through immorality, lack of faith and non-adherence to Christianity. After reading it, it makes sense and holds very true to our generation. But how can we be sure that it was an actual prophecy by a cannonized Saint, or a hoax made to play on the emotions of God fearing Christians? I have tried to resaerch it a little on the internet, but that is never a good way to find truth, is it? I have heard everything from "the date and other details in this prophecy have been changed to sound more appealing" to, "this is just another Catholic Church scare tactic." I would like your opinion on what you may know about this prophecy. Thanks. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Scott: The so-called Prophecy of St. Nilus is fake, an apocryphal work of uncertain origin. In this prophecy the end of the world is suppose to happen in the 19th or 20th century depending on which version you find. I imagine that since we are now in the 21st the so-called prophecy will appear again on the Internet in a new version predicting the end of world in the 21st century. There are many problems with the text of this prophecy. For example, in one version it says "After the year 1900, toward the middle of the 19th century..." Ah, 1900 onward is the 20th Century. Bottomline: the prophecy is a hoax. Ignore it and I might add, one ought to ignore any website that publishes this as a real prophecy. God Bless,
