Question:

Years ago when I was stationed in Hawaii, I found a young woman who had been gang raped and shoved behind a toilet in a public restroom. The thing I remember most are her eyes and the smell blood and semen. She has kept in touch with me and every year she sends me a small gift on my birthday thanking me for finding her and geting help.

I loved cop shows like Law and order SVU, after that I will not watch stuff like that if I do I see her face and broken body. I dont see how anyone can consider sexual violence entertainment or expose children to it even though its "just a movie".

I belive that we as a culture are glorifiing the muderer, the rapest, the drug dealer then we wonder why alot of kids think that sort of life style is cool.

Thanks for being there
Dean

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Dean:

We will pray for that poor woman.

I agree with you completely.

The phrase, "It's justa..." is a phrase from the mouth of Satan. That phrase is used to justified any number of things that we ought not to do. "It's justa movie", "It's justa song"; "It's justa TV Show"; "It's justa game"; "It's justa for fun"; "It's justa joke".

These are ways to dismiss the sin or the inappropriateness of something to justify to oneself and to other that it is okay. If it was truly okay one would not that to "justa" excuse it.

If I made a movie "Little Black Sambo" that depicted black people in a stereotypical slave way I would be tarred and feathered. I do not think anyone would accept my explanation that is was "justa movie."

If I created a board game called "Concentration Camp" where the goal was to burn in the ovens as many Jews as possible and the one who burns the most wins, could I be excused if I said, "It's justa game"?

Why is it that when we deal with that which will harm or even kill our soul, when it deals with Satan's sandbox, all of a sudden "it's justa ..."?

When TV sitcom character Murphy Brown had a baby out of wedlock and Vice President Dan Quayle said it was a negative role model, he was lambasted by the press and the comedians saying, "It's just a T.V. Show." I doubt if those hypocritical liberals would say that if I produced the movies with the themes I mentioned above. Magically my movies would not be "justa movie".

What we allow into our minds matters. What images and notions we allow into our minds will effect our thinking, our psychology, and our spirit.

St. Ignatius Loyola said:

"All should take care to guard with great diligence the gates of their senses (especially the eyes, ears, and tongue) from all disorder, to preserve themselves in peace and true humility of their souls..."
