Question:

At what point does watching a movie with objectionable content become a sin? (Of course I'm not talking about pornography)
Thanks!
Kayla

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Kayla:

I cannot answer that. If we are not talking about a movie that is objectively sinful to watch, such as a porno movie, then the matter is up to your conscience and what you consider objectionable.

In general watching a movie that has objectionable content is not a sin in itself. The issue as more to do with the near occasion of sin. If a scene in a movie stirs up lust, for example, then it is best to change the channel, look away, or stop watching the movie.

If the movie as a whole is not objectionable but there is a scene that is pornographic, then we should certainly look away or otherwise not watch that scene. If we purposely continue to watch a pornographic scene because we want to indulge in the lust of it, then that can be a sin.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
