purchasing relics julie Thursday, September 18, 2008

Question:

Dear Bros,

I once knew of a gal who had many relics, some given to her and some she bought. How does one go about obtaining authentic relics?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Julie:

First Class relics are normally restricted to parishes, monasteries, chapels, or other places where they can be venerated publicly. Today, about the only way to get a certified First Class Relic is by petitioning the bishop, unless someone has one they give away.

If a person has a First Class relic they need to donate it to a parish or monastery or chapel, or at least make arrangements for it to be publicly venerated periodically.

Second Class are sometimes distributed, but especially Third Class relics, can be distributed by Shrines or monasteries. For example, a Franciscan convent may have a third class relic of St. Francis that they can give you.

There are some Catholic apostolates where third class relics can be procured.

Third Class relics do not come with a certificate of authenticity so you have to trust the person you get it from that it is a true third class relic.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
