mortal sin during prayer | Pecatori | Tuesday, September 16, 2008 |
Question: Hello bro.Ignatius. I just wanted to ask about sinning mortaly during the rosary. The catechism says that the prayers of those in the state of mortal sin is not accepted (unless they pray for the grace of conversion). Now I live in mortal sin I want to be holy but cannot love GOD more than certain things (I lament this situation). I say an act of contrition before every rosary but before finishing the first mystery I am assailed by blasphemous thoughts and then I think :''perhaps they are right''. So shall I interrupt my prayer and try to say it from the beggining ?then it will takes me many hours to say a rosary please give me a solution THanks |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Pecatori: Well, I am not aware off-hand of the passage you mention in the Catechism, but that does not matter to the substance of your question. You say that you live in a state of mortal sin because you cannot love God more than certain things (whatever they are). That is not true. In fact, that is a bunch of bull. Whatever it is that is a stumblingblock to loving God, STOP IT. God gave you the ability to make choices. Choose to repent of whatever your mortal sin is and get right with God. If you do not stop the mortal sin you will not have to worry about blasphemous thoughts during the Rosary because you will be going to hell. If you die in a state of mortal sin, you will go to hell. Thus, whatever it is, resolve it, repent, get to the Sacrament of Confession, confess your sin and be reconciled with God and the Church. DO IT NOW. As for saying an Act of Contrition before saying the Rosary, that will not work because you are not serious about stopping your sin. Your act of contrition is hollow and false. Your Act of Contrition must include a "firm purpose of amendment", which means that you must do what you have to do to stop sinning. From your narrative here, it appears that you are doing nothing to stop sinning. That being the case, your Act of Contrition is meaningless. As for blasphemous thoughts during the rosary prayer that cannot be mortal sin unless you are deliberately thinking those thoughts on purpose. You say you think sometimes ''perhaps they are right''. Who is they? Voices? The voices that are saying blasphemous things? This suggests that these thoughts are "voices". Those voices could either be sourced in a psychiatric problem, or sourced in a demonic problem. In either case these thoughts would not be mortal to you. That you need to be concerned about is not the rosary. You need to be concerned about your immortal soul. Whatever it is that has you in the bondage of mortal sin, take care of it. Make the choices that have to be made to stop the mortal sin. In that context, be sure that whatever this sin may be is actually mortal sin. You need to talk to a priest as soon as possible. God Bless,
