crosses | Katie | Monday, September 1, 2008 |
Question: I have another quick question. A priest was talking about carrying our crosses at church. I find the idea comforting and it gives me courage. I was wondering if the consequences of our bad choices/sins are also crosses or is it just stuff like like cancer or a child with a disability which would mostly not be the result of your choices. On the other hand, we have the murderer who must spend his life in jail (a life of isolation and loneliness which he must endure for his sin) and a more commonplace example would be a person who goes into a lot of debt by unwise financial decisions(a life filled with complications and shame) or a person who gets AIDS by living a sinful lifestyle. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Katie: Carrying one's Cross will refer to carrying hardships that are beyond our control, such as disease and disability AND carrying the hardships of the consequences of our sin after we are forgiven for that sin. For the murderer, he can be forgiven and returned to a State of Grace. But, he will still suffer the consequences of sin. Those consequences become a Cross he must carry. The same goes for any other sin in which the consequences linger on way past the time the person is forgiven for the sin. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
