Question:

Hello,

I recently purchased a book on spiritual direction--which seems orthodox from a Catholic perspective--but I am not sure.

"The Way of Spiritual Direction"-- This book seems like an orthodox book (quotes much from St. John of the Cross); however, I always get a little nervous when an author is associated with some new age thinking. Let me explain...

I read your post on "Pierre Teilhard De Char" and the Catholic Church's issue of warning. Makes sense. Anytime a proposed Christian writes about "spiritual energy," my antenna go up. All too often, those in Chrisitan circles who write about such things espouse a new age type of mentality. And, as one who loves his Catholic Faith in Christ, I do not wish to read anything that is dangerous.

One of the writers of the above, a Catholci priest, wrote another book that seems (although I am not certain) to be in defence of Teilhard. And your position on Teilhard is confusing since your store sells a book, entitled: "O Blessed Night!: Recovering from Addiction, Codependency, and Attachment Based on the Insights of St. John of the Cross and Pierre Teilhard De Char."

Are you in favor of the above book? It would seem that the author derives much of his thought on the writing of Teilhard. If you are against Teilhad thinking, why would you sell a book that seems to derive much of its thinking from him?

Also, I have read where Pope (then Cardinal) Ratzinger and Pope JP II have both quoted from Teilhard--true? Why would they do this, knowing that his writings are being warned against and dangerous?

Also, the other author of "The Way of Spiritual Direction"--is a hermit who wrote another book, entitled, "Mystery Hidden Yet Revealed: A Study of the Interrelationship of Transcendence, Self-Actualization and Creative Expression." This title also seems to be new age (alhtough I am not certain). Any thoughts? Again, I want to always remain true to the teachings of the Catholic Faith.

Please advise.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Joe:

What was posted about Teilhard was not "my position". It is the position of the Church and by that nothing more need be said. Any book in defense of Teilhard is out-of-line.

As far as this book "O Blessed Night" I can find no reference to this book in our bookstore. Perhaps you can give me a URL of the page this is on, because I cannot find it. If it is there, I will take it down.

As for the Pope quoting from Teilhard I know nothing about that. But, I am sure anything they quoted was something that was okay. Just because a person has been put on "the list" does not mean that every dotted "i" they write is wrong. If the Pope quoted something from Teilhard it would be a quote that related something correctly and there would have been a reason for the quote. Such a quote would have to be taken in the context of the whole of whatever the Pope was talking about.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
