liturgy-blessing holy water | alexander | Sunday, August 3, 2008 |
Question: Is it correct to add unblessed holy water in the church disposal areas when the containers still contain some blessed water. The present policy is just to add unblessed water to the reamining blessed water in the font. Somehow I do not think this is correct practice? Thank you. Deacon Alexander |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Alexander: I am not sure what you are asking about "disposal" areas. If Holy Water is to be disposed of it needs to be pour onto the ground and not in the regular drains that go into the sewer system. Baptismal water, holy water, etc. that is to be disposed of needs to be poured into the sacrarium in the sacristy. If you are talking about Holy Water dispensers in the Church that the faithful may help themselves to Holy Water to take home, if the dispenser is like half full regular water could be added. The regular water mixes with the blessed water and becomes blessed itself. But, this cannot be done over and over, or done when there is little Holy Water left in the dispenser, because of the dilution factor. Perhaps pouring regular water in the dispenser ONCE and only when there is more blessed water than not could be done, but otherwise the priest should be blessing the water that goes into those dispensers. There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for him to not do this. If he is that lazy, there is a problem. It only takes a couple of minutes to bless the water. God Bless,
