Question:

This is related to a previous question - http://www.saint-mike.org/qa/fs/ViewAnswer.asp?QID=1101

Would the old nun who went to hell in St. Theresa of Avila's vision be saved if she repented immediately after dying?

We live in a society where many people are seduced into the destructive culture of self-worship and self-centeredness the so called culture of death. Many people are brainwashed with what they see around them and follow. Will being deluded by the culture of death be considered a mitigating circumstance when they face judgement?

Will they be saved if immediately after death, they are to repent even though they have the mark of mortal sin on their souls?

Question Answered by

Dear RL:

Repentance after dying is not possible. Whatever one's state of soul at the moment of death that is the state they will be in for eternity.

God gives us every opportunity to accept Him in this life. There is no excuse. We each have millions of chances in our life. If we reject God in this life, we will reject God in the afterlife. The disposition of the soul does not change after death.

We are given a test. We have until our death to pass it. If we fail, there is no do-overs.

In an ontological reality, those who die with mortal sin on their soul CANNOT repent after they die. They do not have the capacity to change their mind. Just as the angels did not have a capacity to change their mind after their test, neither do we.

There is just plainly NO EXCUSE to not accept God in this life. I think (this is not from the Church, but it makes sense to me) and anyone who is about to die in a state of sin, that Jesus will personally come to that person in the last nanosecond of life and give the person one last chance. If the person rejects that offer and dies with the sin on their soul, then that is their choice.

But, after death, the choices made in this life are sealed.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
