Question:

Yes it is true that I could tell my sister all of these things, but she would not consider them that important. My whole family has always gone to church every Sunday, but they seem to be nominal Catholics (except my mother) and churchgoing is just a habit. The deeper reasons for going to church never ocurred to me until I really investigated them and as for me imparting this knowledge to my family members, it would go in one ear and out the other. In my opinion, which is based on what I see and how they respond to fundamental Christian concepts like loving your neighbor, they are Sunday Christians. I am not saying they are bad people, but they have the opinion that the rest of society has about treating your neighbor. If he is nice, treat him nicely, if he is not, drop him. They don't even wager like Pascal, they simply go on Sundays.

In elementary school I used to wonder why Jesus died for me. I just didn't get it and it was repeated over and over again as if my teachers didn't get it either. So this attitude in Catholic schools seems common and among cradle Catholics basic tenets of the faith are not taught either out of ignorance or political correctness.

So I don't see what it would do. Another thing is that I read from an informed source that about 1 in 100,000 people are saved. I used to think maybe about 70% of people went to hell. This statistic seems severe and it was told by St. Vincent Ferrer, I think, someone who being a saint probably wouldn't lie.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Katie:

Well, if they will not respond to the logic that breaking the rules in the Catholic house is rude, then they must be very inconsiderate self-centered people.

Pray for them.

Only God knows how many people go to heaven and how many go to hell. Any private revelation in this manner, even to a Saint, must be taken with a grain of salt. The official teaching of the Church is that we do not know the number.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
