How many times for confession? Kristopher Saturday, August 21, 2004

Question:

Is it okay to confess the same mortal sin every other week or so for over say a year or two? I sincerely try to avoid this one sin and I'm always truly repented and I always resolve to stop... but how much is too much and when do I stop confessing until I "get it right". When will the priest get sick of me and say "come back when you're done sinning?"

Thank you I appreciate your counsel.

Dear Kristopher:

No matter how many times you commit the same sin, you need to confess it. If that is weekly, then it is weekly. Assuming you are not being scrupulous and are actually committing an act that is certainly Grave, no priest should discourage you in this and if one does, he is out-of-line. The Church teaches that we are to come to the Sacrament of Confession as often as we may commit mortal sins.

As it is in any confession, you need to offer genuine contrition with purpose of amendment. After doing that, if you sin again, even the same sin, then that is a brand new incident that needs to be brought to confession anew.

In terms of habitual sins, you also need to try to find out ways to break the cycle. This can be hard and can take years, but that needs to be worked on.

Habitual sins like this tend to be issues of compulsive-obsessive behavior. There are medications, such as Zoloft, that helps to lessen the effects of compulsive-obsession so that it is easier to use self-discipline to avoid sin.

In addition, staying away from the near occasion of sin is very important. Also, if you feel the temptation, distract yourself for a few minutes, such as washing the dishes, watching the News, mowing the lawn, whatever. You will find that distracting yourself sometimes only for a few moments that by the time you are finished with the dishes, or whatever, the temptation will have left.

Bottomline to your question: you confess as often as you commit a grave sin. There is no limit according to Jesus. God's forgiveness is limitless.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
