re: who can ordain a Bishop | claire | Wednesday, June 4, 2008 |
Question: Hello again Br. Ignatius, thank you for your response, and yes it did clear up things. Just another question: If a Bishop goes ahead and ordains a Priest to become a Bishop without the permission of the Pope, is that "new" Bishop then a valid Bishop? Or just a Priest still? Thank you and God Bless, Claire |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Claire: Any valid Bishop can ordain another bishop and that new bishop will be valid. If the Bishop does not have permission to consecrate the new bishop the new bishop is still valid, but illicit. If a schismatic Bishop no longer in communion with Rome, or a Bishop who has become a Satanist even, ordains a new bishop may do so validly, but illicitly. The bishops he ordains will be valid, but illicit. The power of ordination is inherent in the power of bishop. This is a permanent power that can never be taken away by anyone. The Church can suspend the license of the bishop to ordain, but no one, not even the pope can remove the power itself. Once a valid bishop has the power he has it forever no matter what he does in future years. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
