Buying a bootleg DVD sinful? Matthew Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Question:

Brother,

I purchased a DVD from a website of a 1974 movie that isn't available officially but I believe it is one of many bootleg copies floating around on DVD-R format. Is this sinful for me to have purchased this? I knew it was probably a bootleg when i purchased it.

Thanks and God Bless.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Matthew:

Buying an object that you know to be stolen is the crime of receiving stolen property. Committing a crime is sinful.

If this is an illegal copy then you ought to destroy the DVD and confess the sin.

Instead, try writing the producers of the film and see if a legal copy might be available. Just because it is not available in stores does not mean that it may not be available from the producers or the movie studio.

Also, I suppose you might contact the copyright holder and explain that their movie is not available and it you can have permission to kept this DVD.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
