sanation? | Josephine | Saturday, May 17, 2008 |
Question: I recently read in my church bulletin about a 'sanation' Myfirst marriage was annulled, my second husband, civil union, died several yrs.ago. My present husband and I were married in the Grace Luthern Church, although I am a practicing Catholic. I have been receiving 'communion' all these yrs. I wanted to ask here at the forum first, because our Priest is new, and the Parish is growing rapidly (small town),and he is very occupied. I felt 'uneasy' about this ever since I read about the 'sanation' Thank you, J. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Josephine: Since your marriage was not in the Catholic Church the marriage lacks "canonical form". This means that your marriage is invalid. You need to continue to come to Mass, but not receive the Eucharist until such time as your marriage is regularized. To regularize your marriage the Church usually does a convalidation through a simple "mini" wedding ceremony in which a new exchange of consent offered between your and your husband. The marriage may also be convalidated through "radical sanation". This is a decree by the bishop affirming that the original consent of the marriage was valid (and this one does not have to offer a new exchange of consent). Radical sanation may be done especially if one party does not want to participate in a new ceremony for whatever reasons. Sanation is relatively rare, but you can ask the bishop about it for your case. For now, however, you need to refrain from receiving the Eucharist until all this is resolved. You need to contact your priest to get the gears in motion to regularize your marriage. God Bless,
