discrepancy in answer about marital sex

Question:

I'm about to be married, and my fiancee and I had to attend a retreat for engaged couples that was sponsored by the Catholic Church. During the weekend, a priest sat down with the entire group of engaged couples (there were about 30 of us) and answered various questions. One couple specifically asked whether oral sex was permissible, including climaxing on the part of either the man or woman. The priest expressly stated that the Catholic Church does NOT frown upon oral sex between married partners.

This confused me a bit because I've read several of your responses to similar questions, and you always indicate that oral sex--specifically, climaxing during oral sex--is not allowed. Could you explain the discrepancy between your position and that taken by the priest at the weekend from which I recently returned?

Thank you very much.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Larry:

If this priest said it was okay for the man to climax other than vaginally, then the discrepancy is that he is wrong.

Regardless of any other issue or opinion about these sex acts, there is one thing that is absolutely certain -- the man must climax vaginally. This is the only way to be open to life. It is a moral evil to not be open to life.

It is no wonder that there is so much confusion about sexual issues and faith issues in general when so many priests and other "teachers" of the faith do not conform to Church teaching.

The situation is so bad in the United States that, in my opinion, one should "presume" that all Retreat Centers, all spiritual direction training, and pre-cana retreats, and the like are not consistent with Church teaching at best, and are often outright rebellious at worse, unless proven otherwise.

This is a sad commentary, but nevertheless true I believe.

In any event, if this priest said it was okay for the man to climax during oral sex, he was wrong.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
