appropriate hours david Sunday, December 12, 2004

Question:

Shalom,

My questions:
When is the appropriate hours for Lauds and Vespers? Is it dawn, sunrise, or simply 6.00 for Lauds? Is it dusk, sunset, or 18.00 for vespers?

Thanx...

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear David:

The "Canonical" hour for Lauds is 6am and for Vespers is 6pm. Although these specific times are not necessary, the office does need to be said as near as possible to these canonical hours. One Hour should not intrude into the time frame that really belongs to another Hour

In the Rule of St. Michael we give a range for our secular members:

Vigils = 2:00-4:00 AM (can be said anytime)
Lauds = 5:00-8:00 AM
Tierce = 8:30-10:00 AM
Sext = 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
None = 2:30-4:00 PM
Vespers = 4:30-7:00 PM
Compline = 7:30-10:30 PM (or just before bed, whenever that is)

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
