Extended Vigils for Christmas | Will | Thursday, November 18, 2004 |
Question: Is it permissilbe to use the extended vigils for Christmas during the night. It doesn't look like I will be able to attend Midnight Mass so I want to find a solemn way to sanctify Christmas Eve, Christmas Morn. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+
Dear Will: Yes. The Vigil for Christmas (Office of Readings) is recommended to be said just before the Midnight Mass. (Night prayer is waived for those praying vigils). If you wish, you may also use the extended canticles and readings as well. This is done by first celebrating the Office of Readings. After both readings and before the Te Deum, the extended canticles and readings may be added. Thus, even it not attending the Midnight Mass it is most appropriate to offer the Office of Readings (vigils) at or near midnight. Also for Christmas Day Morning Prayer is normally said just before the Mass at Dawn. God Bless,
