Museum exhibit on Book of Hours | Mark | Tuesday, October 26, 2004 |
Question: Dear Brother Ignatius Mary, Forum readers who live near Saint Louis, Missouri, may be interested in seeing the exhibit "Painted Prayers: Books of Hours from the Morgan Library", at the Saint Louis Art Museum until January 9th, 2005. This has a large selection of late Medieval Psalters for lay use, and exhibit many beautiful pages from these prayer books, as well as extensive commentary on them. The curators did not get their Catholicism completely correct (in particular, the doctrines on Mary and Purgatory), but still handled it in a very positive and interesting way, even to the point of comparing the richness of the historical Psalter with the relative barreness of the current Liturgy of the Hours. A group of men in black cassocks were extremely interested in this exhibit! I'm not too clear about the definition, but I think the Medieval Book of Hours is roughly comparable to our Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I would recommend purchasing the exhibit catalog, available at the end of the tour. The museum hours are: Tuesdays-Sundays, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm; open until 9:00 pm on Fridays; Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. The exhibit is FREE on Fridays, but $10 at other times. The museum has a good selection of Catholic art, and is located in the recently beautifully renovated Forest Park. Yours in Christ, Mark |
