Office for the Dead | Blake | Tuesday, October 26, 2004 |
Question: Dear Brother, Can you tell me when the Office for the Dead may be said? There are times when I would like to offer my prayers during the day for the church and my dead family members and friends but want to stay within the guidelines of the Divine Office. Thank you. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+
Dear Blake: It would be easier for you to get a Liturgical Calendar that lists day by day what is permitted. Generally, following the restrictions for the Mass of the Dead, the Office of the Dead is allowed on any weekday during Ordinary Time unless a Solemnity, Feast, or Obligatory Memorial falls on that day. Some Obligatory Memorials, however are open for a Special Office of the Dead (e.g. 1st Anniversary). Office of the Dead is generally not allowed during the seasons of Christmas, Lent, excpet for some days where Special Office is allowed, and also the Octave of Easter. To know specifically which days are allowed, I would recommend buying a liturgical calendar that lists when Masses of the Dead are allowed and follow the days for Masses of the Dead for the Office of the Dead. God Bless,
