Liturgy of the Hours alone? Matt Thursday, August 26, 2004

Question:

Dear Brother,

I'm just starting to learn about the liturgy of the hours and I have a question. When I look at how the prayers are prayed, it doesn't look like you can pray them alone. My question is can you pray them by yourself or do you have to be in church with the priest and laity? Thanks for your time... -Matt

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Matt:

Yes, you can pray the Divine Office alone. In fact, most every diocesan priest and deacon prays the Office alone.

The arrangement of the Offices accommodates singing the Office in choir, but the Divine Office can also be recited and not sung, and said alone rather than in choir.

For example, in those instances where there is a prayer fragment said be the leader followed by a response by others, just do both parts. This may mean saying the same phrase twice. That is okay.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
