Question:

If this is out of line please feel free to delete....

In terms of the Divine Office, the norm "officium pro officio" (office suffices for office) is always the rubrical key.

As you say the rubrics in terms of what office to use is "clearer than mud"

Without taking away any option that the Church gives in the rubrics, I would like to offer the following suggestion, especially to beginners ---

Solemnities and Feasts --- All from the Propers and Commons

Memorials (Obl. and Opt.) --- As given in the Propers, the rest from the Weekday

Weekdays --- From the weekday

At least this is how I have learned to make the mud a little clearer, allows the mind and heart to focus on the text of the office and not the ribbons, and liturgically this seems to respect the character of the office as primarily temporal and not sanctoral and allows the Solemnities and Feasts to be truly days "out of the norm"

Hope this helps
