Question Title Posted By Question Date
Memorial of St. John Vianney Joseph Wednesday, August 4, 2004

Question:

Dear Bro. Ignatius Mary,

I am having trouble finding the right Antiphons, readings, and intercessions when it comes to memorials and feast days.

For example, today was the memorial of St. John Vianney, and the Guide read as follows

Wed. St. John Vianney, P Mem 1268
From Com of Pas 1748
OOR 856, Rd 68 and 1269, Pr 1271
MP 1763, Ps 861, Pr 1271
EP 1769, Ps 874, Pr 1271

My question is really for the EP. Do I use the antiphons found in the Commons or those in the Psalmody on page 874. The Guide makes no reference as to what pages the EP Antiphons are on. Also, what reading and intercessions would I use? The reading and intercessions on pg 874, or from the Commons on page 1769. My quess for both of these questions would be the commons. Am I correct?

God bless and PAX!

Joseph

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Joseph:

(note: page numbers refer to the 4-vol edition, vol 4)

The rule of thumb is that we begin with the page indicated for Evening Prayer (p 1769). That page is the Anchor. We recite the Hour from that page unless the guide or a note on the page, refers us elsewhere. In this case the guide is telling us to use the Psalms from the Four Week Psalter that begin on 874.

So read the Antiphon from the Commons (beginning at 1769) and the Psalms from the Four Week Psalter that begin on 874.

Now, since the reading and intercessions are in the Commons, we use them unless the guide indicates otherwise.

Finally, the guide says the closing prayer is from the Proper of Saints on page 1271 (which is the same prayer for the Office of Readings).

Summary:

1) Begin with the Common of Pastors.
2) Use the Antiphons from the Common of Pastors
3) Read the Psalms from the Four Week Psalter
4) The Readings and Intercessions from the Commons of Pasters
5) The concluding prayer from the Proper of Saints

The key is knowing where to start -- the Anchor page. That anchor for Evening Prayer for the Memorial of St. John Vianney (Aug 4) is the Common of Pastors (p 1769). You use all that is located at the Anchor page unless the guide refers you elsewhere. When directed elsewhere you recite ONLY that part that the guide indicates.

In this case the guide indicates redirection to the Proper of Saints (874) for the Psalms -- that means ONLY the psalms. You return to the Common of Pastors for the rest of the hour unless redirected again for another portion. In this case we are redirected again for the closing prayer.

Hopefully this is somewhat clearer than mud.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
