Themes for the Hours Carol Sunday, March 25, 2018

Question:

When is Lauds prayed for the Liturgy of the Hours? is there a prevailing Theme prayed during these hours? For example Vespers' Theme is Glorification of God, the creator of the world and its Providence. Thank you for answering my question. God bless.

Dear Carol:

Sorry for the delay in answering.

Each hour of the Divine Office is designed to sanctify that hour of the day. But, in addition to all else that is meant by the hours, from the General Instructions of the Liturgy of the Hours are the following themes:

  • Office of Readings (Vigils) = office of praise (GILOH 57)
  • Lauds = resurrection of the Lord Jesus (GILOH 38)
  • Terce, Sext, None = commemoration of the events of the Lord’s passion and of the first preaching of the Gospel (GILOH 75)
  • Vespers = the redemption (GILOH 39)
  • Compline = penance (GILOH 86)

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
