Question:

Dear Brother:
Where, in the single volume edition of Liturgy of the Hours, can I find the Te Deum? Is it only said in the Office of Readings?

God Bless You,
Michael

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Michael:

The Te Deum is said in the Office of Readings, after the Second Reading on Sundays outside of Lent, and on Solemnities and Feasts.

The one volume editions only have a sampling of the Office of Readings. In the Daughters of St. Paul edition the Office of Readings begins on page 1465 and the Te Deum is located on page 536.

The Catholic Book Publishing one volume edition the Office of Readings sampling begins on page 1785, but does not have the Te Deum.

The only way to pray the Office of Readings properly is buy the four-volume edition.

DO NOT go to the Universalis website for the Office of Readings, or any other Office. They do not use an approved translations and are rather arrogant about not caring.

Since this is a Liturgical prayer it is regulated by the Church, just as the Liturgy of the Mass is regulated by the Church. It is not a private prayer to do with as we like. The Church has provided the guidelines for praying the Liturgy of the Hours by laity. We are to follow those guidelines.

Thus, if one uses an unapproved translation then they are not "praying with the Church" but merely doing a personal devotion. When "praying with the Church" we are praying with the entire Church in heaven, purgatory, and on earth. When we pray the Liturgy of the Hours in a way that violated the Church's official instructions, any 'ol way we want, or with any translation we want, then we pray by ourselves.

There is an online version of the Liturgy of the Hours that does have the correct and approved translation in English (and ai think is a few other languages). It is called www.ebreviary.com. There is a yearly subscription to access all of the Hours.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
