invititory antiphon/gospel canticles Jesse Wednesday, January 12, 2005

Question:

Brother Ignatius Mary,

I regret your illness is making life difficult for you. I just said a pray for you and for the blessing of your ministry.

I know that in private recitation it is not necessary to repeat the invitatory antiphon after each strophe but is it permissible to repeat it after the doxology as it is for the psalmody?

Also, is it required to make the sign of the Cross for the canticles of Zechariah and Mary? Is it also required during the canticle of Simeon?

Thank you for your help and God Bless you.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Jesse:

In keeping with the general character of antiphons it would be appropriate I believe to repeat the antiphon either at the end of the Psalm and before the "Glory be..." as is usually done with the Psalmody, or after the "Glory be" since that is provided for in the text.

The Sign of the Cross is to be done with the Canticles of Zechariah and Mary, but not with the Canticle of Simeon.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
