Following psalter & seasons, or feasts | Aaron | Tuesday, December 14, 2004 |
Question: Dear Brother, In reciting the Office, when the liturgical calendar falls on a particular season e.g.; Advent, Lent, Easter, we would naturally would take the psalmody from the Psalter and revert to the Proper of the Seasons for readings, collects and intercessions. Are we obligated to observe any memorial of a saint or a feast (Assumption) in the Office? if so, how do we go about it for instance; when we are in the 14th of December 2004, we observe the 3rd week of Advent - as well as observe the memorial of St. John of the Cross? Thank you and God bless. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Aaron: Solemnities, Feasts, and Obligitory Memorials are required; optional Memorials are optional. If two celebrations occur on the same day, then the highest ranking one takes preference. There is a section in the book that gives the rankings of feasts. The Memorial Feast of St. John of the Cross is celebrated on December 14th as normal. God Bless, |
