Defending the Catholic Church Mary Thursday, May 16, 2019

Question:

I was talking to someone about Jehovah Witnesses and their Watchtower society and how they change their beliefs based on what the Watchtower says. My friend, who is not Catholic, said that the Catholic Church has changed a lot too, over the years. I told my friend that there have been changes in traditions in the Catholic Church but that the doctrine of the Church and it's teachings have not changed. He disagreed with me. How do I defend this in the future and are there things I can read to help me defend my faith?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Mary:

Your friend is expressing a common myth about the Catholic Church. It is often the case that these people are not very specific about which doctrines have been allegedly changed. Thus, the first thing to do is to ask your friend for specifics. Do not let him get by with vague answers. He needs to specifically name the doctrine that he thinks has been changed.

Once you know the specifics of his allegation, you can refute his view. Catholic Answers has a number of tracts that can help you. Here is a list of articles that may help you.

You can also come back here to ask how we would answer an issue that is specifically suggested.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
