Question:

Hi Bro Ignatius,

I was talking to a Jehovah's Witness the other day and we got on the subject of Jesus being God. I quoted ”the word became flesh and dwelt among us" his reply was ” if Jesus is God why did he pray to himself" wasn't sure how to answer this.

Thank you for your time.

Dear Fred:

My apologies for the delay in answering your question.  My computer had a nervous breakdown and I had to completely reinstall the system.

The first thing to remember about Jehovah's Witness is that they are not Christian. They do not believe in the Trinity, which makes their baptism invalid. In addition, many of their doctrines are blatantly non-Christian.

Since Jehovah's Witness do not believe in the Trinity they obviously do not believe that Jesus is divine. Given that is understandable that they would say "if Jesus is God why did he pray to himself." If you try to quote Scripture to them to prove the divinity of Christ you will not get far because their version of the Bible called, New World Translation, is translated, if one can call it that, differently than any Bible anywhere in Christianity.

For example, the absolute proof-text for the divinity of Jesus is John 1:1, which reads, "the Word was God." The Jehovah's Witness Bible changes that verse to read, "the Word was god." Because Jehovah's Witness are taught non-Christian doctrines in their Bible is especially translated according to their bias is very difficult to have a conversation with them and especially difficult to try to show Christian doctrine from the Bible. Jehovah's Witness and the rest of Christianity simply have different vocabularies, different means to words, and thus we are speaking two different languages.

Anyone who desires to have conversations about the Faith to Jehovah's Witness needs to be thoroughly prepared. I would advise purchasing from San Juan Catholic Seminars two booklets entitled, 'Beginning Apologetics 2: How to Answer Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons" and "Beginning Apologetics 2.5: Yes! You Should Believe in the Trinity: How to Answer Jehovah's Witnesses." These little booklets should help you a great deal in talking with Jehovah's Witnesses.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
