Are confessions necessary? | Veritas | Tuesday, November 2, 2004 |
Question: Does John 20:23 actually mean that the priests have the right to withold forgiveness for one's sins? "Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained" (John 20:23) Please tell me the truth, as in the Bible, the right to forgive sins is the sole prerogative of God, and nowhere in the Bible did the Apostles actually remit someone of their sins. Do we actually need to confess our sins to a priest for forgiveness ? Could you please give me a biblical basis for this? |

Dear Sir: In the future you need to use a real name. We do not allow "handles" in this forum. Thanks. The Biblical basis for the Sacrament of Confession is John 20:23 and Matt 18:18. The Scripture says what it means, and means what it says here. For more detailed information on this please see the articles: Confession and Forgiveness of Sins God bless, |
